Website Resources for Researching Home Repairs

In my last post, I reminded you  that you need to know what’s in your homeowners insurance policy. Once you know what’s covered, you’re in position to decide what home repairs you’re going to do on your own and what repairs insurance will pay for. My insurance agent is coming out on Wednesday afternoon, but for now, I do know I have to deal with the damage in my basement on my own.

Here are some helpful websites I’ve come across during my DIY adventure:

Sarah from Home Depot left a helpful comment and a link to their site on my last post. I visited the Home Depot site and I found the  Weather Center. This center will help you navigate the perils of droughts, floods, hurricanes, and wildfire. There are also videos laying out your next steps that are pretty reassuring for DIY neophytes. Never removed sheetrock? No problem!

Another site I like is called  The Money Pit. This name caught my eye because in the past few weeks I’ve gotten visions of Tom Hanks and Shelley Long in that movie from the 80s. This site has got a lot of great information and it’s easy to navigate. It focuses a lot on repairs the homeowner is making on their own and not necessarily repairs that have to be made under duress. But it’s a good overall site for routine maintenance tips as well recovering from home disasters.

And if you’re a fan of This Old House, you’ll learn a lot on BobVila.com. It’s a good  resource for prevention tips, such as how to prevent flooding in the basement. There are also good articles on how to determine when you need to hire professionals or whether or not you have the skills to make the repairs yourself. Personally, I’d like to watch a show called This Middle-Aged House because it seems like a lot of things in my home don’t look so hot. It seems sudden, but in reality, things have worn down over time. But right now, I’ll grab good advice from anywhere I can get it.

Okay, my next step in my basement repairs is to decide what type of flooring to replace my carpet with. I’ll be researching and revisiting some of the sites I mentioned above. If you’ve used any great websites for research on home repairs, I’d love to hear about them.
